Dr. McCullers is the chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Pediatrician-in-Chief at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. Dr. McCullers is also an accomplished translational researcher who has built a National Institutes of Health-funded laboratory focused on the study of co-infections. He has made important discoveries on the interactions between influenza viruses and bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) that result in fatal pneumonia.
Dr. McCullers worked as a pediatric infectious disease researcher at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital studying from 1996 to 2012 before being recruited to lead Pediatrics at UTHSC. Originally from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, Dr. McCullers received his Bachelor of Arts degree in pre-medicine from the University of Virginia. He received his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he also completed his internship and residency. He became the Dunavant Chair of the Department of Pediatrics in 2012 and has used this position as a platform for advocacy within the child health sphere in Memphis and surrounding regions.
Dr. McCullers was named Director of the nascent UTHSC Clinical and Translational Research Institute, iRISE, in 2014 and is the lead investigator on our recent CTSA application to the National Institutes of Health.
